Educational initiatives for children

FLY & HELP Foundation

Reiner Meutsch, former managing director of a travel company, turned a lifelong dream into a calling. It all started in 2010, when the former manager from Westerwald exchanged his desk for the cockpit to become the tenth German to embark on a round-the-world trip in a small plane, supporting five educational projects along the way.

'I've traveled a lot in my job. Most of the time, the focus was on tourism marketing. However, many dream destinations do not provide the locals with idyllic conditions at all. I find it particularly tragic when children do not have access to education - and therefore no future prospects', says Reiner Meutsch. 'That's why I supported educational projects for children during my world tour.'

The educational situation in developing countries is sometimes catastrophic. FLY & HELP has set itself the goal of remedying this situation. The five projects Reiner Meutsch supported during his world tour were therefore just the start of a long-term educational campaign by the FLY & HELP Foundation.

Since being founded in 2009, a total of 850 schools have already been constructed in 57 countries with funding amounting to 48 million euros. Through newly constructed buildings and improved infrastructure, more than 170,000 children in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have already been enabled to attend school, laying the foundation for a self-determined future.

All donations are directed entirely into the projects, as Reiner Meutsch personally covers all the foundation's expenses or they are funded by sponsors.

In August 2022, Condor expanded its long-standing partnership with the FLY & HELP Foundation and became an official partner under the ConTribute initiative. The foundation, founded by Reiner Meutsch, is dedicated to constructing schools in developing countries. Due to the increased commitment, passengers have been able to donate to educational projects on all flights since August 2022. Starting from one euro, guests can make a donation as part of their onboard purchase (Buy on Board and Bordshop). To promote the fundraising campaign, an image movie is available on all flights in the Inflight Entertainment system.

Since the beginning of the partnership, Condor has already supported six schools in Africa (Kenya & Namibia) and Central America (Dominican Republic, Mexico, Haiti), co-financed and supported numerous special flights for the Foundation's events, most recently the ‘Night of German Hits 2024’ in Cancún. With the expanded collaboration, Condor will continue to contribute to enable the construction of new schools in Condor's target destinations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Every donation goes directly into the projects, as Reiner Meutsch personally covers all administrative costs, or they are covered through sponsors.

Condor guarantees that it will pass your donation on to the Foundation without making any deductions.

In general, the following applies to tax deductibility:
Amounts up to 300 Euros can also be claimed at the tax office without a donation receipt (donation confirmation). For a direct donation to the Foundation, you only need the bank statement and an exemption letter. As  the donation is made via Condor in this case, please send your Condor receipt and this exemption text (Section 50 4 no. 2b EStDV), which includes a declaration of the Condor partnership, to your tax office. This should generally be enough for the donation to be acknowledged.

If your tax office also wants a donation receipt, you can request one from the foundation. To do so, please send the following information to info@fly-and-help.de:

  • Your scanned receipt from Condor
  • Your name
  • Your full postal address

If you'd like to make more donations, feel free to do so directly to our account at FLY & HELP. You'll automatically receive a donation receipt for donations of 50 Euros or more if you provide your address:

Wir helfen in Afrika e.V.

The non-profit association Wir helfen in Afrika e.V. has taken on the mission of enhancing the living conditions of people in Africa and ensuring children receive the necessary education. The association based in Gelnhausen was established in 2010. Previously, it had been active as a private initiative for 20 years.

The focus is on Kwale District in Kenya, south of the Condor destination Mombasa. There, the association's project goals are implemented in schools and health clinics - children with limited educational opportunities are supported on their journey through life via school sponsorships.

The health of the people is also central to the association's work. One focus is combating the infestation of the sand flea "jigger".

Another project close to the association's heart is From Girl to Woman, which supports and empowers girls on their way to becoming young women, for example by providing hygiene products such as sanitary towels that were previously lacking.

Water supply, vocational training, job creation - all of these are also part of the extensive projects of the association, which aims to empower individuals in fulfillment of its social responsibility and the Christian mission of charity.

The association operates solely on a voluntary basis. "This is only possible thanks to the great support of the Condor ConTribute team," says the board of Wir helfen in Afrika e.V..

Kanamai Health Center Kenya

The small clinic in Majengo is not only the first point of contact for quick medical help, but has also become a popular spot for many Condorians during their stay in Mombasa. The clinic has 2 delivery beds, an X-ray machine, and doctors are available several times a month for consultations; the poorest of the poor regularly receive free treatments. The clinic is run by Betty Maina, who is as charismatic as she is warm. The newborns receive little hats and socks after birth, and Betty can now also dress them in rompers and other baby clothes. These valuable items, such as hats and socks, are collected in advance by the Condor crews at home and handed over during a layover in Mombasa.

However, support can take many forms: On his flight to Mombasa on May 1, 2018, Matthias Rühle (Purser) carried a complete ENT unit in his baggage, donated by ENT doctor Fortuna Gebremeskel and packed and handled free of charge for the flight by Cargo Mover. Dentist Gunnar Doobe and dental technician Daniel Wiegand spontaneously traveled to Mombasa during their vacation, set up the unit and put it into operation.

Dentist Alexander May, a friend of Matthias Rühle from Walldorf, was also on site shortly after with his friend, dentist Daniel Kiefle, as well as donor and ENT specialist Fortuna Gebremeskel. They had a mobile unit with them for treatments, filling and suturing materials, surgical instruments, and medications. And then help was given – to as many people as possible! The next deployment is already eagerly awaited on site. Supporters of the Blue Bell Kindergarten arranged for a new, second fully-flat bed in August in case two women need to give birth at the same time.

Helpaniola

Condor Sponsor: Martin Sehnem, flight attendant at Condor

Condor flight attendant Martin Sehnem is in the Dominican Republic, working with his aid project helpaniola.com to support children and people with physical disabilities. In a small town in Azua, he meets the locals and learns about what's lacking. The hearing aid wholesaler audibene and the medical supply store rahm Zentrum für Gesundheit donate a significant number of hearing aids and wheelchairs to him. In November 2017, Martin Sehnem founded the non-profit association helpaniola.com e.V. to enable the direct delivery of aid supplies into the country.

St. Joseph House of Hope Foundation

Condor sponsor: Gisela Vöcking-Mc Conney, Purser at Condor

Since 2013, the St. Joseph House of Hope Foundation has been supported by HelpAlliance. The first major project was the construction of modern sanitary facilities, which were necessary to secure approval for the Foundation's school and training centers. Since then, more than 450 children and young people have been educated from kindergarten to high school each year. Training facilities were also established in tailoring, metalworking, carpentry, and electrical workshops. This was later followed by an IT class with 24 new computers to teach the pupils IT skills.

The latest project includes beauty/hair and massage courses, as well as cooking/baking and catering classes. These are intended to provide young people, especially those without formal education, with qualified training. The program is primarily targeted at girls who have had limited educational opportunities until now. In the future, there are also plans to build a canteen and a café, where the trainees can learn in a hands-on environment.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit the students and their families hard. All schools were closed for nine months. Thanks to the support of HelpAlliance, all projects were completed and lessons for 340 students in the lower grades resumed. However, the high school remains closed due to insufficient funds. A particular challenge in 2021 is new government requirements that require additional teachers and textbooks. Additionally, children should continue to receive a hot meal every day, which is often their only meal of the day.

Guarabira Children's Village in Brazil

Condor sponsor: Roy Martin Heron, Condor Traffic Center

The Guarabira Children's Village, currently home to 360 children, is situated in the village of Guarabira in northeastern Brazil. Since 2020, there have been many developments: The long-planned training center for teenagers has been completed. A second-hand tractor was newly acquired to farm the land in the children's village.

Fruit and vegetables for personal use are cultivated and maintained by the children and young people. In the event of a bountiful harvest, the fruit and vegetables not used personally are sold at a nearby market. The money is a good investment in the further education of the children and teenagers in the Children's Village.

There is also a new carpenter's workshop in the children's village. This is where the tables and benches for the market stall were constructed.

To support and continue this work, we appreciate every Euro and all of your support.

Calvary Zion Children's Home in Kenya

Condor sponsor: Tanja Fischer, flight attendant at Condor

In 1999, the Kenyan couple Jane and John Karigo decided to welcome orphans into their home alongside their own four children, providing them with a new family. What started back then with a few children now provides a home to 49 children of all ages.

In 2012, the children's home moved into a new, spacious home with a large vegetable garden, a flock of chickens, and a small herd of goats. Bananas, papayas, beans, and passion fruits from our own harvest enrich the children's menu. Tanja Fischer regularly collects donations for the project in her hometown.

Blue Bell School in Mtwapa, Kenya

Condor sponsors: Birgit Rusche, Matthias Rühle, both pursers at Condor

Since October 2006, the Blue Bell Kindergarten has been sponsored by HelpAlliance, initiated by Birgit Rusche (Condor) and Kerstin Auersch (Lufthansa). Back then, 46 children aged between two and eight were cared for and educated at Blue Bell. In the following years, the school was able to be continuously expanded.

Today, Blue Bell School includes a daycare, preschool, primary school, and secondary school. 307 children have been attending the school since January 2021. In supporting the school, particular emphasis was placed on improving the school infrastructure, as well as on hygiene and water supply. Which means that, funding went to expanding sanitary facilities and the acquisition of large water tanks for rainwater collection, for example.

Thanks to donations and diverse support, especially from Condor employees, it was possible to purchase tables, chairs, and teaching materials. Today, the school employs 8 teachers and 7 educators. The current challenge is primarily on managing the coronavirus pandemic, just like it is back home. The people on site are even more affected. Due to government measures, the school had to close for nearly nine months in 2020, resulting in no income generation and the need for additional funding.

To support families in particular need, funds were quickly and efficiently made available to provide urgently needed food supplies as part of an emergency aid program at the end of 2020. The Blue Bell School is a successful example of self-help and will continue to provide many children with access to education in the future, soon achieving its goal of becoming financially independent.

Medical airlift ‘Wings of Med’: From aid cargo to bear operation on the ice

The collaboration between Condor and Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help (LOG / WoH) in the humanitarian Region has been ongoing for about 15 years now. From the joint large-scale operation for Haiti, devastated by the earthquake in 2010 with over 200,000 dead and 300,000 injured, long-term cooperation developed in the form of a medical airlift named ‘Wings of Med’. As part of the collaboration, urgently needed relief supplies were flown to Santo Domingo on a Condor Boeing 767-300 just a few days after the earthquake. From there, the cargo was transported via helicopter directly to the disaster region to assist the people in need. These were mainly medicines for cholera, medical supplies, tents, blankets, baby food, and tablets for purifying drinking water.

On additional Condor flights, tents were transported to Haiti to protect people from wind and weather. The International Red Cross emphasized that through this ad hoc measure for transporting medical supplies alone, the child mortality rate in Haiti was reduced from 18 percent to 0.08 percent following the natural disaster.

Condor repeatedly assists LOG/WoH in transporting aid supplies to target destinations within the Condor route network and supports LOG/WoH initiatives with attractive flight prices, for example, as prizes at charitable events. In 2010, Condor organized a fundraising campaign with the Peanuts, which brought in 175,000 Euros for LOG. The donations came from ticket and on-board shop sales as well as special promotions, with all proceeds dedicated entirely to charity.

At the end of every year,  Condor and LOG/WoH get together for a special ice hockey collaboration. For EHC Freiburg ‘Die Wölfe’, the aid organization is involved in the traditional ‘Teddy Bear Toss’, which has its origins in ice hockey-loving Canada. During the first intermission, thousands of stuffed animals are thrown onto the ice, either brought by fans in advance or acquired for a donation from LOG/WoH before the game. For years, the campaign has generated a significant amount of money, which LOG/WoH allocates for humanitarian purposes. Condor supports a raffle with prizes organized within this framework.

DIANO – Dental International Aid Networking Organisation

Toothache is unpleasant, especially when there's no prospect of relief. This is noticeable to the trained eye, and spontaneous emergency aid developed into an international aid organization: DIANO. The name stands for Dental International Aid Networking Organization, which is primarily active in underserved regions in the Caribbean and Central America. In targeted missions, especially in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, and Guatemala, DIANO aims to offer basic dental care to people in underserved areas.

The organization provides care for people who do not have access to dental treatments or who cannot financially afford them. DIANO reaches people in remote mountain villages or outside metropolitan areas and establishes treatment facilities in schools or community centers to provide direct pain relief on site.

Dental treatments are highly material and equipment intensive, and the organization relies on logistical support from the very beginning. Condor assists DIANO in transporting the necessary equipment to the Dominican Republic. DIANO has been active in this region for 15 years and has preferred traveling with Condor ever since. The collaboration has developed to be very fruitful and reliable. Last but not least, we've grown fond of the people. For the predominantly young dentists, such aid missions are valuable life experience, and they rarely stop at just one mission on site.
